Why create this game?

This artefact was developed and produced as a result of a group study project with the goal of participating in a “Gamejam” style challenge where the team had to create a game based on a random theme picked out of a “Random Theme Generator” platform available online (The theme ‘Ghosts’ was assigned to this group).

The critical objective of the project is to allow the students involved in the process to achieve specific learning outcomes tied to the project’s brief, therefore enhancing their skills in respective areas of game development (Art, Code and Design).

What inspired this game?

“Diablo III” has been a key reference to define the game’s genre, identified as an ARPG heavily based on dungeon-like levels and character progression.

The “Dark Souls” franchise is known for its gameplay flow being unforgiving and challenging, attracting a core audience which plays the games to overcome the brutal encounters found in the environment. This artefact was inspired by some aspects of the flow and reflected it in a deadly user experience with merciless combat.

“Little Nightmares” along other similar titles is critically important to the product, because during the concept and development phases of the game’s narrative, “Little Nightmares” proved to be close in many ways to what the storyline is.

What is the core experience of this game?

Narrative: The entire gameplay experience revolves around a set storyline with linear development, which unravels itself as the levels are played and the character interacts with the world.

Theme: Due to the nature of the project being attached to a defined theme (Ghosts), the game displays a strong thematic influence which drives the narrative, gameplay and art styles.

Player Amount: A key feature to the play experience is the ability of having a flexible amount of players joining in and out during a session to beat the levels, which respond dynamically by increasing the challenge standards based on the number of players in that mission.

Level Design: Having set the subgenre to Dungeon Crawler from a very early stage in the concept phase defined of the pillars to be its level design. Players will spend most of their times beating enemies and bosses inside carefully crafted environments, and so each level needs to have core attention in its creation.

How can the game be played?

Despite being developed for PC, the game is compatible with PS4 Controllers due to its single or multiplayer nature.
